The Countryside Conservation Office (CCO) was established July 2018 and, as a priority, the CCO will enhance countryside revitalization in Lai Chi Wo, as well as ecological conservation in Sha Lo Tung, and aims to extend the initiatives progressively to other remote countryside areas. The CCO uses Government funding for undertaking relevant conservation and revitalization efforts, as well as minor improvement works and rehabilitation of the existing architectural environment in the countryside. The CCO also supports collaboration of local non-profit-making organizations and villagers based on an interactive and co-operative approach under the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme. This tour will visit the following villages and will be led by staff from CCO as well as collaborators of regeneration project in the villages: Built more than three centuries ago, Lai Chi Wo was once a thriving and affluent Hakka village with more than 200 houses, laid out in precise horizontal and longitudinal rows according to geomancy rules, and protected by rustic walls. The village was home to over 1,000 residents, before a sharp drop in population beginning in the 1960s. Recently, the village has gained a new lease of life as part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and is now a popular destination for hikers and ecotourists, with farmers back growing rice and vegetables and grazing cows, and some old homes have been transformed into shops and visitor centers. Located beneath the mountains facing Kuk Po’s wetland along the coast of the Sha Tau Kok Sea, Kai Choi School and its annex block are ready to be re-opened for their new use. After three years of research, design, and construction, the annex block has been transformed into Kuk Po Common, a community public space in Kuk Po, integrating architecture conservation and design with culture, art, community, landscape, and ecology. The project aims to respect the cultural importance of the site while integrating new design elements, transforming it into a common area that can be enjoyed by the public.
